Tunneling from a late April afternoon into the darkness under the New England Central Railroad tracks, alongside the Connecticut River. Originally the Vermont Valley Railroad, then several others including the Boston and Maine, this stretch follows the waterline closely, carved into the bank’s ledges and steep terraced bluffs.
