    • Yes, elm is having a hard time of it. I might be wrong but I believe this was the more common slippery elm. On a related note, I am troubled by the situation with the butternuts, nearly wiped out by canker. I have discovered a “butternut orchard,” as it it referred to historically, in Putney that dates from Abenaki times and will be researching it further this summer. The butternut was a very important tree to the indigenous people; it seems like a metaphor for these times…
