great meadows harvested november putney vtThe grays and browns of November cloak the fields as winter draws nigh. These meadows were farmed by the native people for hundreds of years before the English ventured up the river from Connecticut and Massachusetts nearly three centuries ago.

    • Thank you for that link Frank – I enjoyed the description there. My riverside and forest wanderings here are a great restorer of the soul, as I look around me and learn to see the signs of those who came before. It’s meditative, sobering, and reinvigorating at the same time. The Abenaki and their neighbors were a part of this landscape for much longer than we can imagine, for their touch was lighter and more empathetic. I am looking forward to many more journeys into the living past that surrounds us, and sharing my insights.
