Burr Arch

lyonsville bridge colrain maThe Arthur A. Smith covered bridge on Lyonsville Road in Colrain. Built in 1870 and the only Burr arch-truss example remaining in the state of Massachusetts, it spans the North River at 99 feet.

    • It was a humid day in the cornfields just outside the shelter of this beautifully restored span. The river beneath looked very inviting! The rhythm of the repeating structural members and the spring of the laminated arch do make a wonderful composition. Thanks for your comment, Mary.
